We’re all stars in our own right, just shining for all to see. Whether it’s our efforts in a particular area of interest, our inherent ability, or our charisma that causes the spark from within to glow, we are meant to shine.

One star in particular stands out through his enthusiasm toward music. Because we recognize him in his pursuit towards influencing the world with his endeavors, we would like to introduce you to him. Take a closer looker at singer-songwriter, Mike Star.

WBM: First, tell me a bit about yourself; where are you from: the basics.

MIKE: Well I’m Mike☆Star and I was sent here from Mars to entertain you guys and perform my life away. (Laughs) No really, my name is Mike☆Star and I’m originally from Baltimore, Maryland. I love to sing and perform! I love pop music: it’s what I do, eat, and breathe. And I love to set stages on fire! (Laughs)

WBM: How has where you’re from developed you as a musician?

MIKE: I would say where I’m from is probably opposite of the kind of music I do, so that made me stronger by making sure I broke barriers for the next guy. But the beauty of that was having to explore and experiment with music to find and discover what I actually love. What I love wasn’t around me so I found it and made it happen. And also being rejected a million times kind of gave me that drive to prove people wrong. I think I was always looked at as this kid trying to do pop music, so I guess I proved them right….just a little bit.

WBM: How long have you been involved with music and what pushed you to pursue it professionally?

MIKE: I [have] really been singing and dancing all my life. I think it’s something I’ll never stop doing. When I was a little itsy bitty kid I remember admiring celebrities on TV. I noticed how music and the person behind it had a influence on the world. So I said to myself, that’s exactly what I’m going to do! I knew I had a different story to tell and could possibly improve the world with my music, so after filming “Step Up 2”, along with one of my producers, London Smilez, we made it happen!

WBM: You have a unique style, how would you characterize yourself?

MIKE: I would characterize myself as “DO WHATEVER I WANT TO DO” (laughs). But no, really I do! I gladly wear what I want and sing what I want, and it just works. Don’t ask me how, but it just does. I’m still trying to figure it out myself. But I definitely have this kind of colorful, retro, hipster thingy going on. Kinda weird.

WBM: What inspires you to write your songs?

MIKE: Life. You know, I always thought it was cliché when I heard an artist say their album tells their story and it’s stuff they’ve actually been through and I would be like “YEAH RIGHT!” But when I actually went in to write and record my album, I listened back to the whole thing and was like…..WOW!….you really poured your heart out and you’re going to share this with the whole world!? And ’til this day I’m still in shock about it because I never had a whole body of work to analyze. I always thought I wrote whatever came off the top of my head and it just worked, but naw, it’s definitely some meat and gravy behind it!

WBM: Who are some of your inspirations?

MIKE: Jay. Wayne. Nickki. Johnny Depp. Pharrell. Beyoncé. Donny Roc. N.E.R.D. Solange. Kanye. Katy. Britney. Dr. Luke. Walt Disney.

WBM: What do you think separates you from the pack as a musician?

MIKE: I honestly believe I am the artist missing from everyone’s CD shelf. You know when you’re a person that listens to all kinds of music and you just have the one space to fill with a CD–that’s just right! Or that 1GB on your iTunes to fill with a dope artist. (Whispers) I think that’s me. But don’t tell anyone though.
