Inspiration can be drawn from challenging the establishment and creating for a cause. Artist Mary Coble created and led a performance art piece entitled Deferral, August 7-10, in which she used her own blood as a medium to express her frustration with a system that bans the donation of blood from the gay male community and barely recognizes her same-sex marriage. According to Mary Coble, blood isn’t her primary medium, yet the subject matter makes it completely relevant. Her finished piece is provocative and reflective of the isolation the blood ban imposes on the gay community.
