It has taken a generous combination of creativity, passion and awareness for Andriana Pilotto to realize her vision of Purelement Naturals. Her natural skin care and cosmetic company takes a conscious stance on using only natural ingredients, but also offers a holistic approach to the psychological and spiritual effects of scent.

With roots in Chicago and a ten year stint in Phoenix, Andriana is an inspiration for women who want to develop their passions into their own business and for anyone interested in discovering natural skin care products. Andriana’s company is unique for sharing not only hand-made products and a full disclosure of every ingredient that is used, but also recipes that you could easily and affordably make at home. Take a peek at Andriana’s social media sites, and you just might see your own facial cleanser or lipstick in the process of being made in her home.

When you’re confronted by the cremes and scents of real products, some of which might even be grown at home, supermarket goop makes less sense than ever. At a time when women are discovering the true dangers behind artificial skin care, an increasing number of talented creators are looking for healthy alternatives. Among many beloved natural ingredients like shea butter and coconut oil, there exists a peculiar nut that produces what is known as argan oil. Its now legendary reputation precedes it in North America as a luscious liquid gold from Morocco. Andriana Pilotto believes that argan oil, in combination with a careful orchestration of aromatherapy, can be an essential ingredient in producing skin care products that are healthy for the body and have minimal destructive impacts on the environment.

Andriana’s products for Purelement Naturals are all handmade, organic and inspired by aromatherapy.

WBM: How did you get started with hand-crafting cosmetics and starting Purelement Naturals?

ANDRIANA: I’ve always preferred a more natural lifestyle and have used essential oils in the past, such as lavender, tea tree, and clove, but I didn’t realize the power of oils at that time. Once I moved back to Chicago from Phoenix, my mom showed me her collection of essential oils and I dove right in. I became addicted to all the wonderful aromas and basically fell in love with aromatherapy, and knew that’s what I wanted to do.

I spent my nights researching essential oils, their therapeutic properties, and started trying out new essential oils from different companies. The aromas are beautifully intoxicating. I don’t know how else to describe it. Some oils take me back to my childhood, family vacations and other memorable events I’ve had. Scent is such a powerful thing and has a great effect on our minds.

I started handcrafting gifts like lip balm, body butter, and pain relief oils for friends and family for Christmas, and got a really good response. My mom also introduced me to argan oil and I fell in love instantly. I loved how lightweight and pure the oil was. I loved the texture and the nutty aroma. My skin was instantly hydrated and looked incredibly healthy. I knew right away that I wanted start a business based on this amazing oil. I also wanted to have a skincare company that offered pure and toxin-free products. There are so many toxic skincare products in the market that are harmful to people, I felt I had to do something about it, and Purelement Naturals was born.

WBM: What are some of the common toxins that are encountered in skincare products?

ANDRIANA: There are so many skincare products that are filled with parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, and diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA), all of which are no good for you. These toxins are used as preservatives, mimic estrogen and have been found in breast cancer tumors. It’s really upsetting that companies put this type of crap in their products.

It’s amazing to me that they don’t feel some sort of responsibility to the general public. It’s the consumers that have made these companies incredibly rich and this is how they repay them: by infusing their products with cancer causing chemicals.

People can take action and fight back. All they need to do is stop buying these cheap, toxin-ridden products that are harmful. I think some people are fearful that they can’t afford a healthy lifestyle, but that’s not the case. There’s tons of information out there. People just need to do a little research. I have lots of D.I.Y. skincare recipes on my blog that people can make at home and they won’t break the bank either.

Andriana’s handmade products look good enough to eat, but we don’t recommend doing that.

Andriana recently tested a powder blush with hibiscus, beets and pomegranates.

WBM: How do you personally connect with the mission and the principles behind your company, beyond it being a method to create natural cosmetic products?

ANDRIANA: My products are more than organic and toxin-free products. There’s a feeling you get when you use them. The aromas actually affect your mood and the products have a purpose. They help you relax, they help calm your mind, certain aromas even invoke memories, and ultimately they make you and your skin feel really good. My products truly nourish the body and soul.

WBM: You develop every product and experiment with new ingredients. What is your process of perfecting your recipe and how do you test each product?

ANDRIANA: Well, I create an initial prototype and get a group of friends and family together to test it out for me. I get their feedback, make any necessary changes and test again. My husband is a great product tester too; I love his honest feedback. It helps me create better products.
